Table Topics Contest Questions

2008
10.31

Current Affairs is a favourite genre. The favourite Table Topics of the month is about the global financial crisis.

One of the questions asked is: How does the current financial crisis affect you?
This year, one of the questions in a district contest is a very simple and straightforward one:

“The credit crisis is going to cause all of us to have to tighten our belts. What advice do you have for our audience members here today?”

This is an easier question that the one at the Toastmasters District 73 Table Topics Final 2007.

The question was: “Do you have to obey all the public speaking rules?”

Take a look at the performance of the District champion. He has a very dramatic start. The audience laughed.  He took a minority view point. The trick question is in the word ‘all’.  At one point, he walked to the lectern to read the topic again.  He paused well to buy some time to recollect his thoughts. He ended by restating his point that one should break the rules because it is more fun.

For Table Topics contests at the District level,  the topics are usually abstract such as quotations, or controversial and humourous ones such as the above.

How to Respond to a Table Topics Question

2008
10.29

It was interesting to see how different people use different strategies during a Table Topics session.

One tried the DIVERSION technique. When asked about the China-Japan spat, he said he knew nothing about the politics, but he sure know about the Miss Universe Contest and how he went to watch them and give them a silent evaluation.

Another TELL A STORY. When asked to comment about countrymen are whiners, he said that if we see the dark side in other countries, we will not whine. He elaborated on a movie in a certain country where the street children were abused, killed and had to fight for their survival. How fortunate we are, when we compare to them.

Another blushed when asked to talk about sex tourist. He went for the DEFINITION approach. He tried to define what it means and attempt using the 5Ws structure – What, why, who, where and when.

The winner gave the PREP approach – Make your point and give your reasons. When asked to comment on the SALES, she make her stand at the beginning that she is against the sales. She stated her reasons clearly. “No 1…., no 2…, no 3…” She was wise not to state how many reasons in the beginning. She merely state the number as she went along.

Face your Fear and Do it

2008
10.29

To succeed in life, we cannot live by how we feel. Because basically we are lazy, we want the shortcuts, we want the easy way, we want to avoid discomfort.

To succeed, we live by will, not by feeling.  You didn’t feel like attempting table topics, but to improve and to overcome the fear, you must take action, and that is to go out and speak.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’ be a perfectionist.  You will get better with more practice.

Veteran Toastmaster Rajiv Ramaratnam of Quincy, Massachusetts shares his tricks for taking the terror out of Table Topics – or any other impromptu speaking situation  at http://www.toastmasters.org/Members/SpotlightArticles/TableTopics.aspx

Buy time by taking your time to greet the audience and repeating the topic.  Then think aloud. If you are really stuck, you can ask someone in the audience for the answer. Say you want to use a life-line.  The audience will laugh.

One Life Live it!

2008
10.28

The easiest way to improve impromptu speaking is still the hardest for most of us. And that is to raise your hand. Be the first to raise your hand. Don’t wait for others. This is the one little thing I attempt to do. I told my club members that they have my permission to single me out as a volunteer.

The theme of the Table Topics Session is on commercial slogan. Naturally I was the first to be called. The slogan is M1′s, “One Life – Live it”. I talk about the sudden loss of my friend. In conclusion, I said that they should not assume that tomorrow will always come. Like my friend, tomorrow never come. So live it.

I am glad I spoke. I was prepared to be at a loss of words. That’s ok. I want to condition my mind. I am glad I ended well cos I tied the story to the topic.

James won the best table topics speaker of the day. The lesson learnt is that humour wins. People love humour, not a sob story.

I could have torn my hair to baldness for the 101 things that have gone wrong or how I could have done better. I might have been harsh on myself in the past. But today, I just celebrated the fact that at least I have tried, I have the courage, I ended well. I am sure that the more I do, the better I will be. That’s cause for celebration.

On my way home, I witnessed a motorist lying on the road, next to a taxi. The words of the Table Topics quesiton echoed in my mind…one life – live it. I am glad I am alive, carrying my daughter with me, and on the way home for dinner. (May 2005)

Just Raise Your Hand

2008
10.27

To have confidence in public speaking is so simply (yet so difficult). Just raise your hand.

It is difficult cos you are putting your ego on the line. Table topics is a time most love to hate. Cos we Asians, are not used to embarrassing ourselves in front of so many people. That’s called ‘saving face’. So do I.

But when I resolved that even if I don’t know the answer, I will still raise my hand. I will make a fool of myself. It does not matter. When I believe it does not matter if I don’t have the answer, the fear has lost its power over me. I trust my brain to come up with the answer. If it don’t it does not matter.

I need to get used to coldstart the brain. There is no shortcut. Practice and practice. And keep refining it.

Take the first bold step. Raise your hand. This act itself, is an achievement. It is boldness. How many people can really do it? This gesture is cause for celebration.

Aishwarya Rai, one of the most beautiful women in the world, was asked by David Letterman if it was common for people in India to live with their parents.

She drew applause by answering: “We don’t have to make appointments to have dinner with our parents.”

Asked how she got into films, she shot back: “How did you get into doing this?” He replied: “The other guy was sick on that day.”

Miss Singapore Universe 2004

It was the year 2004. The 5 most beautiful women were left standing on the stage. One of them will be declared the most beautiful woman in Singapore. The person who can answer the question best will be crowned Miss Singapore.

You will cringe at their answers.   Some will crack under pressure and say the most silly and meaningless thing. But some will keep their cool and say something meaningful and witty.

The question is: “If your daughter wants to join Miss Singapore Universe, what advice would you give her?”

The winning answer from 19-year-old Sandy Chua.  She said:

“I will tell her to go for it and do her best.
I will also tell her a pageant is not about winning because it is only one night.
But she is the daughter I will love for the rest of your life”

The Question for Miss Universe 2004

2008
10.25

Miss Australia Jennifer Hawkins won the Miss Universe 2004 title.  The question is: what period in history she would prefer to live in if she had her pick.

Hawkins quickly answered “this time” given the abundant opportunities that exist for women.

If one study all the questions in the beauty pageants, you will discover that most of the questions are repeated. If contestants are given special training by speech coaches, their success in impromptu speaking will be a deciding factor in winning the crown.
